This book is OK, but not one of Brebner's stronger works. It's a swashbuckling romance set in 1813 England, and includes plot elements like smugglers, a French fugitive, a dungeon full of rats, a duel, an assassination attempt on the Prince Regent, a kidnapping, and a riot; along with plots and counterplots and ambiguity about who the "good guys" and "bad guys" are. The main problem I had with it is that Brebner handled a similar premise involving the heroine -- a wealthy orphan being manipulated into marriage by an unscrupulous guardian -- much more convincingly in "The Brown Mask", and I thought the characterizations here were much weaker.Product details
